Get “The Facts” about the IMO Carbon Intensity Indicator.

The IMO CII regulation entered into force as of January 1, 2023, and there has been a lot of different views circulating as to what it is and what it will mean for the global shipping industry. To help separate speculation from fact, and assist carriers with correctly fulfilling the CII reporting requirements, the WSC has put together a handy guide for members.

CIIs were developed by the IMO as a short term greenhouse gas reduction measure along with the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI). Whereas the EEXI addresses technical efficiency of existing ships, CIIs were developed to promote increased operational efficiency.

“Carbon Intensity Indicator - The Facts” explains the basis of CIIs, the rating bands and their verification. It is a complement to regulatory documents published by IMO, and intended to provide a general point of reference and assist persons involved with data collection and reporting.
